Caught in the Middle: The Adventures of a Serial Reader

My cousin recently called me a “Serial Reader.” Not because I devour books at lightning speed, but because I have a habit of starting them and never finishing. It’s a label that perfectly captures my reading habits, though it leaves me wondering why I can’t seem to commit to just one book.

In reality, I’m more of a serial listener than a reader. I listen to audiobooks far more than I physically read. But even then, I tend to start and never finish. Mostly, it’s self-help books that I dive into with enthusiasm, only to get distracted by something new before I reach the end. It’s not that they aren’t interesting—quite the opposite. But after a while, I find myself craving something different, and that’s when the next book catches my eyes/ear.

When it comes to YA novels, though, I have to give props to Rebecca Soler. She’s an amazing narrator, and her voice has me completely enraptured. In fact, I’ve started picking YA books based on whether she’s narrating them. My library even has a feature where I can click on the narrator’s name to see all the books they’ve narrated, which has led me to discover some real gems. Thanks to Rebecca, I’ve actually finished The Lunar Chronicles and the Renegades Trilogy by Marissa Meyer—both of which I absolutely loved.

But for the most part, I’ve got a growing list of titles that have been started, bookmarked, and then set aside for something that got my interest.

So, are you a Serial Reader (or Listener) too? Or do you finish every book you start? Either way, there’s something exciting about the journey each book offers, even if I don’t always make it to the final destination.

P.S. I’m going to start a log of all the books I explore in a new blog category called Serial Reads. Stay tuned for more!
